The Wadhams United Church of Christ has received two Quadricentennial Grants. The first one is a 2008 Community Mini-Grant funded by New York State for $1,150. The purpose of the grant is to catalog, centralize, and create a permanent exhibit in the Parish Hall about the history of the church and its hall, interpreting its relationship with the development of the community of Wadhams,
Built in 1833, the church was moved across the frozen Bouquet River to its current location in 1866. The Parish Hall, originally a stables and dance hall for the corner hotel, was purchased and moved behind the church in 1903. Wadhams, a booming crossroads hamlet by the falls 100 years ago, was important to the industrialization of the Champlain Valley.
The grant will also provide for an updating and publication of the church and hall history, as well as a roadside historic bronze plaque.
The second grant funded as a 2009 Essex/S. Franklin County Developing Community Arts Grant by the Arts Council of the Northern Adirondacks provides $956 to create Wadhams: Then and Now, interpretive walking tours about Wadhams and church history on July 12 and 13, with costumed guides and a strolling folk-singer/guitarist . Visitors will experience remnants of mid-19th century life with homes, a restored Methodist Church, a doctor's tiny office, and interpretation about the natural ecology of the Boquet River falls, In use today are the 1903 hydroelectric plant, still producing power, and the Wadhams cemetery. Guests will view the history exhibit developed from the first grant, hear an antique pump organ and a theatre organ in the church, talk with and see the work of an antique-window and wood-furniture craftsman, and conclude by tasting scones and hearing how they and artisan breads are baked in an old-fashioned brick, wood-fired oven in contemporary Wadhams!
